In the Star Wars movies Doctors and medical droids are able to replace limbs with artificial prosthetics that are as good or even better than the original limb. Which is a good thing because in a place that is packed with lightsabers it’s not surprising that a lot of people lose their limbs. To me it seems like picking up a saber the wrong way can result in a loss of hand or leg.
The most notable lost limbs belong to the Skywalkers. Luke’s hand was cut off by Vader at the end of the Empire Strikes Back and is probably the most famous. Although, Anakin himself has lost more than his fair share of limbs. In the movies alone, Anakin has his arm cut off at the elbow by count Dooku, his legs and other arm cut off by Obi-wan Kenobi, and finally, has his artificial hand cut off by Luke. In the end, he lost more limbs than most people are born with. However, with a little help from cutting-edge technology, he was still able to become one of the most feared warriors in the galaxy.
On our world no prostheses would be considered better than the original limb, but, advances are being made every day. A company called Touch Bionics has created a new prosthetic hand that looks and moves like a real hand. The bending of the joints and the possible motor control gives the user a lot of realistic options for use. All of the fingers actually move and the user can hold a suitcase by the handle firmly, open a bag of potato chips, and tie shoe laces. The hand is able to hold things in a firmer way because the whole hand can grip the object, fingers can be set to individual grip strength, and it even works with your smartphone.
